Music, as a means of civil and social growth, as a powerful instrument for the assertion and defence of human dignity: this is one of the objectives of the Musicians for Human Rights (MfHR) Movement. This Movement was born in May 2009 and consists of professional musicians performing in the most important international orchestras under the direction of superb musicians, such as Claudio Abbado and Daniel Baremboin.

Among the initiatives these musicians want to pursue to realize their goals, is to be active in formation, information and sensitization in schools. The project carried out together with the music classes of the G.G. Belli secondary school in 2009/2010 falls within this picture. The students chose The Right to Water as one of the most sensitive issues of our time and their research work during the whole school year centred on this issue.

Several monthly meetings took place to form a student orchestra following the example of the Human Rights Orchestra with some musicians of the HRO (Alessio Allegrini, Anita Mazzantini, Alfredo Mola, Lavinia Morelli, Marlène Prodigo, Francesco Senese, Stefano Trevisan).

Paolo Marzocchi, the composer, and a member of the Movement Musicians for Human Rights, has composed a piece for the chosen theme titled “La Meccanica Del Ruscello” (The Mechanism of the Brook), which will be part of the program and will be performed together with the students.

During the year, the students had a chance to attend a seminar on the world water resources given by Ugo Fanti, assistant regional representative of Amnesty Inter-national, and a lesson  by Professor Guido Barbieri, music critic and host of music and water programs at Radio Tre.

It will be Valentina lo Surdo, host at Radio Tre,  to guide the public through what can be called a show-concert, in which, alternatively, there will be readings of testimonials gathered by students on the chosen subject, and videos and music performances by the student and the HRO orchestras.

The concert program includes pieces by composers such as George Friderich Händel,
Johannes Strauss, Astor Piazzolla,  up to the performance of P. Marzocchi’s piece.
